![]() ![]() Julian is in fact a supernatural entity a Shadow Man who brings to life the worst nightmares of those he targets. He has a particular fascination with Jenny, as Julian has been in love with her since she was a child, and seeks to use his games and schemes to erode Jenny's resistance and make her his own forever. The series takes much influence from world mythology and literature, especially Norse Mythology. ![]() The Hunter introduces Jenny Thornton, a teenager seeking to purchase a game for her boyfriend, Tom Locke's, birthday. Luckily, she is able to locate a partially hidden game store, appropriately named "More Games", in an unsavory part of town. Here she is met by Julian, whose striking beauty and aura of menace startles yet enchants Jenny. Unnerved by him, she seeks to leave, but the boy entices her with his words and soon presents her with a blank, "glossy" box, stating that this is what Jenny is seeking. Entranced by it and encouraged by Julian, Jenny buys it and departs. As she leaves, in response to Jenny's cordial "See you later," Julian ominously states "At nine". Upon returning home with the game, against Jenny's better judgment, at the party she, Tom and their friends open and assemble the game, which resembles a small haunted house. The objective of the game is to have the paper doll pieces representing each player get to a turret at the top of the miniature structure. However, the main obstacle to the players will be nightmares each player must face their worst personal nightmare in order to progress. There are also the added dangers of the Creeper (an enormous snake), the Lurker (a large wolf) and the Shadow Man, an entity akin to the Sandman, who brings nightmares rather than dreams and sleep. With mounting horror Jenny notices that the piece for the Shadow Man is a perfect image of Julian. Smith wrapped it up and I would have been disappointed if I hadn't of ever found out if Jenny and her friends survived or not. I found that it all became a bit too strung-out, the story got repetitive and I really just wanted to get to the end to see how it was all going to be concluded.Īt over 700 pages long it was a challenge to finish a book that I knew I wasn't going to end up loving but even though I had problems with it, I'm glad I stuck with it until the end. Unfortunately, by book 2, 'The Chase, I started to lose interest. Each of the characters was interesting and unique and I thought the idea of them having to overcome their own personal nightmares made great reading. The story unravelled at a break-neck pace, it was suspenseful and exciting and I liked the idea of Jenny and her friends becoming embroiled in a game which they had to win to save their lives. The trilogy started promisingly enough and I think that 'The Hunter' (book 1) actually did make quite a strong start. I don't want to hear every single little detail so I did find that I was skipping over pages at times. I prefer the horror to be slightly more subtle and not so in-your-face. And frankly, I found bits of 'The Forbidden Game' a bit too creepy for me! Which is not to say that others wouldn't love it. I think my main problem is though that I enjoy the paranormal but I'm not such a big fan of those books which have quite a heavy horror slant. I am a massive fan of both the books and the TV series, so I've recently been trying out some of her other stories. Now, I've mentioned before what a huge fan I am of L.J. I've certainly been interested in checking many of these authors out that I missed the first time around. I think it's great that the popularity of the paranormal/supernatural genre has breathed new life into a lot of authors who you could say were ahead of their time. This is another re-release as the trilogy was originally published in 1994 but it's now been repackaged by Simon Pulse and brought out for a new audience. This volume contains The Hunter, The Chase and The Kill. ![]()
